Power Together is the island’s first community-owned Virtual Power Plant. The project wll install 1 megawatt-hour of smart battery storage across 200+ homes, schools and small businesses. These batteries store energy when it’s cheaper or cleaner and release it when demand is high, helping to lower bills, cut carbon, and bring financial benefits back into the community.
Smart home and commercial batteries are connected through the proven Fairer Warmth platform. Together, they form a Virtual Power Plant that trades flexibility and stored energy on national markets. This brings income back to the island while supporting a cleaner, more resilient energy system.
The project is funded through the Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Scheme.
We’re now inviting island households, community buildings and small businesses to join the network by hosting a smart battery.
Local investors will also soon be invited to co-own the island’s first Social Virtual Power Plant through a community share offer.
Investors may receive modest interest once operational and community costs are covered (capital at risk). Additional social impact finance will help ensure long-term resilience.
A VPP links many small batteries into one smart network. Together, they store energy when it’s cheaper or cleaner and release it when demand is high. This helps reduce bills, cut carbon and support the local grid.
Households, schools, community buildings and small businesses across the island can apply. Priority will go to residents facing higher energy costs or limited access to low-carbon technologies.
Most households can expect estimated savings of £50–£300 per year, depending on usage, tariff and battery size. Actual savings may vary.
No. Batteries can still reduce bills by shifting energy use to cheaper periods. Homes with solar may see additional benefits, but it’s not a requirement.
Some systems will be free or discounted for eligible households. Others may involve a contribution. All costs will be clearly explained during assessment.
A qualified advisor will look at your current energy use, potential savings and suitability for installation. They will also check any practical considerations such as space and wiring.
Batteries are managed through the Fairer Warmth platform. It automatically charges and discharges them at optimal times to maximise savings and community benefit.
Only the information necessary to operate the system is collected. Data is handled securely in line with UK GDPR requirements.
Once operational costs and community commitments are met, modest interest may be paid to community investors. Capital is at risk, and returns are not guaranteed.
Timelines will be confirmed once procurement and funding are complete. Anyone registered will be updated as the installation schedule develops
Whether you’re a householder, a community organisation, a business or an investor, Power Together offers a real way to take part in the island’s transition to clean energy.
